Ok... you've heard of MrBeast... but have you heard of Dream?
Dream is the 'Master Storyteller of the Minecraft World' with over 40m subscribers on Youtube
Last week I watched this video on Colin and Samir of Dream, who is the popular Minecraft Youtuber & Twitch streamer that has 40m+ subscribers across various channels.
His real name is Clay and he’s only 23 years old. He didn’t really gain popularity till COVID hit in 2019. And we were all sitting around at home.
Some of us had nothing better to do than to watch others play Minecraft. I, unfortunately, cannot claim to be one of them.
As I was working my butt off and missed this whole emergence of the legend of Dream. LOL
How did he get so popular?
Basically he tells the story of how his background was in storytelling. He’d read ~100 books a year for years and just loved good stories.
So basically he brought storytelling to Minecraft by introducing a new format. How did it work?
Basically him and his friends would agree on an overarching story
Each person had a different character with his own personality and goals
Then they would play out that story in Minecraft
And people that were watching could watch from any person’s perspective that they would choose
It was essentially like being able to watch a movie from the perspective of each person in the movie
And so if there were say 5 people in the movie… you could literally watch the movie 5 different times from 5 different perspectives
This is an example of the type of Minecraft storytelling Dream and his friends do.
“Dream” is kind of like Superman… but in the gaming world
By this I mean that he wears a mask so that nobody knows his true identity. Maintaining this anonymity gets quite tricky once you have over 40m fans.
So he talks about covering all his house windows, pulling all photos of his face from all online sources, and literally going around with a mask on 24-7 when he’s not in his house.
I mean… that is commitment. Hahaha
So why does he wear this mask? Well he talks a bit about it in the interview and I really liked the reasons he gave.
He talks about how just like Superman… Dream could be anyone. It could be me, you or the kid down the street.
With the underlying gist being that any ordinary kid can rise to greatness.
Dream almost got kicked out of school
Dream talks about how he hated school. And almost got arrested for truancy as he decided he just wasn’t gonna go.
It wasn’t that he wasn’t smart… as he was. He just didn’t think that school taught anything useful.
And so he told his whole family and parents that he was gonna make it big his way. In the gaming world.
They of course all laughed at him.
Till he actually did it.
And then they stopped laughing. Because he was worth like 10x what they were worth combined. LOL
I came up with my friends… and we are a team till the end
There was one part in the interview where Dream talks about the guys that he always plays Minecraft with on all of his shows. Guys like GeorgeNotFound and Sapnap.
Dream actually came up with both of these names for his friends and had propositioned them with the whole concept at the outset.
But now his friends are huge in their own right. All of them are multi-millionaires.
But that doesn’t change their friendship or the fact that they stick together. As he puts it…. “we got into this thing together.. and we’re sticking it out together till the end.”
I think we’re gonna be hearing a lot more about Dream in the coming years. As he embarks on his next adventure of singing.
